MSDE Releases Social Studies Task Force Report

The Maryland Social Studies Task Force was formed by State Superintendent Nancy Grasmick in 2004 to "develop a shared vision for the teaching of social studies in Maryland schools." Acknowledging the challenges faced by social studies over the past decade, the social studies task force made nine recommendations in its report. As stated in the report's conclusion, these recommendations are "intended to reverse social studies’ decline." Key recommendations include establishing standards governing instructional time; administering a statewide social studies assessment in elementary and middle school; increasing social studies course requirements for prospective teachers; and launching a campaign to gain public support for more and better social studies instruction.

In announcing the formation of the Task Force, Dr. Grasmick stated her belief that its work would "help keep Maryland's schools among the best in the nation." The Maryland Council for the Social Studies hopes that the recommendations of the Social Studies Task Force will be seriously considered. To do so would certainly be in keeping with the spirit of leadership at MSDE that has placed Maryland number one in public education and continues to drive the work of each us to truly ensure that our students are getting the education they deserve.
